Roos liberally employs used inner tube tires, a material embued with a violent frisson in South African history. ![]() The armor is impeccably and laboriously fabricated from contemporary materials: urethane plastic, porcelain, wood, polyurethane foam, acrylic resin, glass, nails, beads and cotton rope and cord. Bedecked in samurai armor, including horned helmets, and wielding replica katanas (curved Japanese swords), they’re impressive figures, but decidedly post-historical. The closed eyes also connote historical invisibility. The eyes are closed, as in George Segal’s ghostly figures, lending them the meditative, transcendent appearance of some Buddha figures. Her four “Samural” statues, differentiated in their titles by Roman numerals, may remind you of the famous ceramic Chinese-warrior figures in the tomb of the First Emperor, but those works were individual portraits, while these pieces are imagined depictions of someone who was never depicted. Roos, a South African artist, engages in what the gallery calls the “explorative reclamation” of that country’s nonwhite history. Yasuke, incidentally, was not forced into suicide he was probably returned to the Portuguese or Italians with whom he had come to Japan in 1579.įour life-sized sculptures of this mysterious figure comprise “Dark Stranger,” Nicola Roos’ examination of myth and historical memory. He instituted a specialised warrior class system with ranks strictly related to fighting skills. He incorporated the use of long pikes, firearms and castles to change the way wars were fought in Japan. He used clever tactics of surprise and deception to defeat his adversaries who were superior to him in numbers. He forged alliances with his neighbours and propped up puppet rulers to further his expansionist aim. He succeeded his father and assumed total power by eliminating all opposition against him, including his own uncle and brother. Oda Nobunaga was one of the most controversial and powerful ‘Daimyos’ (feudal lords) of Japan who ruled in the late 16th century.
